Type

Portfolio

Interview (General)

Do’s

Electronic or not, bring one!

Arrange your Portfolio in an order, one suggestion is according to the requirements of Good Medical Practice by GMC where you can put every piece of paper you have from appraisal, assessment to probity.

Emphasis on reflective practice in the portfolio is important, for example adding few clinical situations where we learnt from reflection.

Know where everything is

Old style trainees if they dont have DOPS, CEX etc should make an effort to get some signed off and add to the portfolio.

Add a section titled "CPD" or something like that and attach a copy of Radiology Curriculum and exam regulations, that gives an impression that you are thinking ahead.

Neat and well organised

Remember the basic facts and outcomes of the audits, publications, posters and papers that you have put in your CV

No matter what your background the portfolio should demonstrate acceptable clinic skills for your level

Have a system when approaching a question/problem

Demonstrate the smooth flow of thoughts than fleeting ideas!

One method is teh STAR technique  - Situation, Task, Action, Results.

Take few seconds to understand the question, think how you will tackle it and then answer, dont jump in!

Read RCR publications, this will help you with guidelines in particular clinical scenarios.

It’s ok to say you don’t know

Rehearse the answers to the normal interview questions e.g. why radiology, what have you done to show interest etc

Remember the basic facts and outcomes of the audits, publications, posters and papers that you have put in your CV

Read at least one Radiology related paper and KNOW IT.

Know about the hospitals in the region.

Form a solid answer why you want to train in a particular region.

Dont’s

Dont scramble through looking for your ONLY radiology abstract

Dont have your surgical logbook on the front page

Dont be silent and only give the diagnosis. Interviewers want to see how you approach the film / question.

Dont make things up

Dont say that you want to do radiology because of a great lifestyle

Dont say you only want to be an intervention radiologist
