www.rlbuht.nhs.uk

The "Royal" was opened in October 1978 and is the major teaching hospital in the Mersey Region for the University of Liverpool.  In 1995, the merger with Broadgreen produced one of the largest acute provider Trusts in the country with 1260 in-patient beds.

The main x-ray department consists of 17 rooms including general fluroscopy and dedicated C-arm specials. There are 3 newly installed state of the art intervention suites supporting 24/7 interventional cover, and a dedicated interventional fellowship.  There are 3 CT scanners, including one 128( A/E), one 64, and one 16 slice scanner. There are two 1.5T Philips Intera MR scanners.   There is a busy Ultrasound Department with 4 rooms.  There are facilities for colour duplex imaging and transrectal imaging. GE Centricity PACS is in situ. The regional assessment centre for breast imaging is based in the Linda McCartney Centre on the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site. Plans to build a new acute hospital on the RLUH site are in progress. It is intended that this will open in 2014 / 15. At this time, elective vascular surgery and radiology may move to the Broadgreen site.

The Radiology department covers all subspecialities. Of particular note is the regionwide unique teritary level investigation of: - MSK (sarcoma and spine); GI ( pancreatic); and Intervention (vascular)

Research is encouraged within the department and there has been a consistent record of trainees presenting work at national and international meetings.  There are regular departmental audit meetings at which trainees often contribute projects.

There are numerous clinico-radiological meetings representing most of the clinical specialties.  There are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday dedicated teaching sessions for SpR's.
